Aboriginal Language and Culture Program
Our school values local Aboriginal history and culture. We are fortunate to have the expertise of Aboriginal members of the community to teach local Yuin trade language and 'Dhurga' language through a rich and engaging program. Through lessons taught outside in our outdoor learning space where a gunya has been erected by Aboriginal tutors, our students learn the significance of Country and some language that is important in the context of the stories of traditional custodians of the land.
In consultation with our local Aboriginal community and the Bega AECG, Lands council and through an Aboriginal Affairs Language grant we have been able to produce two books and a language app. which support the programs implemented.
We are proud of our Aboriginal Education programs at Tathra Public School.
The painting featured was produced by local Aboriginal artists Graham Moore and Bruce Toomey. It is titles 'Tathra Country'. It shows the three main river systems leading to the ocean, the mountains from which the river's waters are sourced and the night sky. Symbolically the circle of the hands are those of the present day students and teachers who come together as one to learn and teach each other about the valuable Aboriginal history of the Tathra area.
